The EU and Gender Discrimination in Sports

The Italian Case

22June2017 13:00 - 14:00

Lecture

ACELG guest researcher Beatrice Russo addresses the principle of non-discrimination on the base of gender in the European Union by focussing on the case of Italian sportswomen who contrary to their male counterparts cannot become professional athletes.

Abstract

In this lunch seminar, the speaker expounds on the "Italian case", which is peculiar because – according to the Italian norms – women cannot become professional athletes while their male colleagues can. The presentation is based mainly on a chapter of Beatrice Russo’s doctoral research project on "Gender Discrimination in the field of sport", which she approaches at three different levels, i.e. by employing a feminist interpretation of jurisprudence, by analyzing the European Union and international regulatory approach and by defining comparative case studies.
