Common Core: Interpretation of Commercial Contracts

In 2010 Jaap Baaij initiated and launched a new comparative legal study for the Common Core of European Private Law.

It is the most comprehensive comparative study on interpretation methods to date. In 2011 twenty-four legal scholars from fifteen European legal systems and South-Africa joined as ‘national reporters’. In 2011 Jaap and his co-editors, Laura Macgregor and David Cabbrelli, from the University of Edinburgh, meticulously  crafted a Questionnaire on the basis of which the national reporters drafted their draft reports. These reports will be reviewed and revised in 2012, after which the editors will commence their comparative analyses. The full manuscript is expected to be finalized late 2013.
